The Only True Democracy Possible Under Capitalism: State Funded Elections
The only true democracy, or truest, under capitalism is tax funded elections.
We live in a plutocracy that serves the interests of the donor class.
To get money to run for office they know they need to please, or at least not piss off too much, those who donate and provide those funds.
The interests of that donor class and everyone else are incompatible.
So the damaging consequence (that can only be mitigated by state funded elections) is that even decent MPs will feel pressured to side with those that control their ability to run at next election.
They will say to themselves,
“I need to run to continue helping my constituents and I need donors to run. So, failing them this time is an unfortunate cost, but a price worth paying”.
I use this more sympathetic example to show that this system doesn’t just allow for corruption but is, in it’s self, a corrupting force.
Under this system of billionaire funded democracy, (sounds absurd when you call it what it is) siding with their donors, even just enough times, to secure funding for the next election is a necessity.
