Don’t let the government water down the Human Rights Act - The Witch Hunt of Veterans is a lie.
The media are failing the public again. And again what I’m telling you is public information from the small corners of the media doing the very minimum, if that.
This Blog post is about the often claimed problem that “only Veterans being investigated” and these cases being “vexatious”
Government either sees this as convenient pretext or if they genuinely can’t see through their english exceptionalism and think it’s a good reason (it isn’t) for “updating” (downgrading) the Human Rights Act.
This is a really really bad idea and would open wounds in Ireland as well as land a body blow to the Human Rights Act.
Which appears, from what I’ve seen so far, not to be true.
However
I’d argue though that even if it is true, the remedy is not the downgrading of the Human Rights Act.
First it is important I tell you the mechanism by which they intend on shutting down these investigations and the terrible consequences that flow like blood from such an action
They want to “Update” the Human Rights Act.
But this is no update, it’s an outright downgrade.
Their change would mean that the act was not applicable before the date of its creation - 1998
this has severe consequences for the people of Northern Ireland, betrayed by the UK Government, as well as every other UK citizen.
This downgrade impacts the Good Friday Agreement on 2 fronts.
Part of the agreement is an equivalence of Rights both sides of the border - this still isn’t quite the case so this would merely put more pressure on the GFA.
But this is no reprieve because these investigations are another component of the GFA so shutting them down would breach the Good Friday Agreement.
This downgrade undermines the core principal of the Human Rights Act;
that the HRA applies to everyone in every situation.
Law works on the basis of principal and precedent.
Making this exemption would set a precedent for government making exemptions - being able to pick and choose who gets Human Rights
So in the interest of truth we will come back to the question of fairness of these investigations:
Is there really a problem of “vexatious investigations”?
Well… it doesn’t look like it.
These numbers were acquired by the BBC in 2017.
I’ll say again whether or not there is a problem here - the solution most certainly is not to undermine the principal of the HRA and set a precedent for creating exemptions to whom the government can deny Human Rights.
You have lost rights already you dont you don’t have time for complacency. I have feared for an now watched my fellow citizens suffer a loss, a theft of their rights and they fact that they are unaware is what I am scared of the most.
How much can this administration get away with under the noses of a public that is busy and stressed from being overworked and only minimally, supported by government. ?
It’s is understandable that they cannot he expected to spend as long as I do for example meaning about this stuff. I only can because I have the time.
It’s the media that have truly failed though. I blame them for tins because if is them that choose what to give prominence and platform to an issue/story bringing it to the attention of the public now extracted from the information deluge that is so dense all detail is lost. Things can be public information but in today’s age of information it’s unfeasible and unreasonable to expect a regular working person to know about something unless the mainstream media have picked it up.
Don’t rely on someone else to spread the word about this. Please do your part and pass it on.
