They want you to call for abolition of the Lords. Don’t be their useful idiots.
Hell No.
Johnson/Cummings are actively trying to neuter the Lords because they don’t want their scrutiny.
You must remember, even if like me you are uncompromising in you advocacy for an elected second chamber, even though the Lords is not currently democratic, it does benefit democracy in its role in holding the executive to account. That’s why they are weakening it
Advocating for the abolition of the Lords is playing directing into their hands.
Call for reform instead.
My proposal:
We can keep some unelected experts for scrutiny process and only allow elected Lords to vote.
This would vastly ease the transition compare£ to changing to a fully elected House of Lords.
I think unelected expert input, as long as non voting, is actually very valuable. For example, The Lords was the place that tried the hardest to save us from the withdrawal bill with higher calibre of debate, probably due to electioneerIng.
Keeping unelected experts would maintain part of that and hopefully raise the bar for elected Lords.
Another idea is potentially longer times between second chamber elections would reduce the risk of the electioneerIng bullshit that occupies, wastes, so much time in the Commons.
This is the considered response, calling for abolition is shooting ourselves, our country and democracy in the foot.
